Hewes Super Bowl Trophy
In: Updates
29 Dec 2008Gentlemen,
Start your engines!!! Finally, the regular season is completed (what a finish in week 17, huh?) and we’re now ready to embark on the 21st edition of the Hewes Super Bowl Trophy Competition. The rules are the same as in prior years, and we now have the beta version of the HSBT web site up and running (kudos to Greg the Great for his work on this over the past several months).
As a reminder, here is what you need to in preparation for the 4 Wild Card games this weekend:
1 – telephone call or text message to The Commish (740-816-0731),
2 – call The Commish on his land line @ 740-548-0761,
3 – e-mail The Commish (srhewes@msn.com), or
4 – utilize the new website (see below for more info)
If you haven’t already registered, you will have to do so by going to https://hewessbt.com. Registration and creating a profile is quick and simple. If you have any questions on this process, you can e-mail Greg the Great (website administrator) at gregory.hewes@gmail.com.
If you have already done so (I think all but Buffalo Bill and Comeback Kid are registered at this time), submitting your picks is simply and quickly done by following these steps:
The Commish is planning to update the official tracking sheet as the games progress, so you can see how you’re doing. This will be exclusively available only on the website for those of you who are inclined and have the time. If The Commish is distracted from this duty (such as taking down a Christmas tree), scores will be updated as the games are completed.
Looking back on the 2008 regular season, most everyone felt the Cowboys and Patriots were pretty much a shoo-in for SB43, with the defending champion Giants lurking in the wings. So, after Week 17 we find neither in the playoffs, as the Cowboys utterly collapsed the last 2 weeks with losses to Baltimore and Philadelphia and the Patriots (while going 11-5 and losing their star QB in the 1stquarter of Week 1) are scratching their heads over the Dolphins resurgence.
2 rookie QB’s will be leading their teams in the playoffs – Joe Flacco (Ravens) and Matt Ryan (Atlanta). Tavaris Jackson (much maligned during the regular season) will be leading the Vikings and Kurt Warner is back after a 6-year playoff dry spell.
How about those Bills? Start at 4-0 and end up 7-9. Ditto poor performances for Cleveland (4-12, after a much ballyhooed off-season) and the Seahawks (4-12 after 11-6 in 2007). Then we have the 0-16 Lions. History. I’d almost be willing to bet they will have a better record next year, but that’s still a risky proposition…
On the flip side, the Colts have won 9 straight, and the Dolphins (yes, the 2-14 team from 2007) have won 5 in a row. Just about everyone else in the playoffs is hot (most others have won 4 of the last 5). Both #1 seeds are limping into the post season – the Giants having lost 3 of their last 5, and the Titans going 3-3 in their last 6 after a 10-0 start.
Looks like the playoffs are wide open. Should be very interesting with no clear favorites.
Let me know if you have any questions and we’ll check back with you in 2009!
