For Pete (the Terp)’s Sake??

Participants,

Well, as soon as I thought we had taken care of the 400 poor souls who did not get to see the Super Bowl (even though they purchased legal tickets and fought through the nasty weather to cheer on their team last Sunday), I finally heard from Pete the Terp (was he hibernating under a shell?).  Turns out that he was in Florida vacationing and visiting his parents during the Super Bowl.

So, in an email conversation with PTT, he indicated he had sent in his score before he left (the Tuesday before the BIG GAME).  I looked for the obvious email from the HSBT website and could not find anything.  Also perused my home and work inboxes and also deleted messages, hoping to find that elusive message that was sent while I was also on vacation the week fore the BIG GAME.

Nothing…

I asked PTT if he had kept a copy of the sent message and have not heard back from him yet.

Here is the scoop — he mentioned in his email that he thought he picked the Steelers to win, 20-17.  I re-ran our scoring model under that assumption to see how it would potentially impact the final results of our competition.  Fortunately (for some), PTT would have had the largest variance in the BIG GAME with that score and would have recorded his 2nd goose-egg of this year’s competition.

Applying the 20-17 score, here would be the final point totals and finishing place for the participants:

  • 7th Place — Pete the Terp (246 points)
  • 6th Place — Ben the Butler (388), formerly in 5th Place
  • 5th Place — Greg the Great (390), formerly in 6th Place
  • 4th Place — Henrico FiveOh (640)
  • 3rd Place — Buffalo Bill (785), formerly in 2nd Place
  • 2nd Place — Comeback Kid (798), formerly in 3rd Place
  • 1st Place — 2011 Winner (814)

Questions:

  1. Is it OK to publish as final the restated figures above if PTT can produce the evidence that he sent in the 20-17 score?
  2. PTT indicated that he thought the score he sent was 20-17, but was not 100% sure.  If he can produce an email with a different score, should that be allowed?
  3. Or — should we play strictly by the rules and keep things where they were under the assumption that he did not submit a score at all?

I appreciate your feedback as PTT scours through his email files.  I will let you know what happens, and PTT may be out of town until this weekend.

I would say, since it didn’t effect the main outcomes, to just disallow the score, unless there is indisputable evidence in the replay/email to overrule the initial calling. So..

1. Yes, its okay
2. Yes, whatever the replay/email evidence says, if it exists
