Hewes Super Bowl Trophy
In: Updates
9 Feb 2021Participants,
First, congrats go out to Comeback Kid, who did come back to capture his 6th trophy in stunning fashion! From worst to 1st, just as he had claimed last week!
Super Bowl 55 Recap
Well, to say the least this game was a real shocker! The slightly favored Chiefs failed to score a TD for the 1st time since QB Mahomes was behind center. That’s… 55 games. And for the Bucs, well they made life miserable for the KC offense all night long. The final score (31-9) was indicative of the game, and now we have Champa Bay (or should it be Tompa Bay?) as Super Bowl winners.
As The Commish had predicted in his update to all Participants late last week, the Bucs were going to win this game. Based on several key facts, the prediction held up:
The Chiefs also didn’t help themselves, as they were penalized 11 times, many of them keeping Tampa Bay drives alive. Bucs QB Brady was barely touched all game (did he get any grass stains on his jersey?), while Chiefs QB Mahomes was scrambling for life many, many times.
Kudos to the Bucs for winning the title for the 1st time in 18 years and for Brady winning his 7th ring. Gronk (with 2 TD catches) has officially retired from being retired.
HSBT Final 2021 Standings
Does anyone listen to The Commish? Well, 2 of you did and one of them walked away with the trophy. Again, congrats to Comeback Kid for staging the largest comeback in HSBT history (356 points). Immediately following his win for trophy #6, I had an opportunity ask him about this record-breaking effort. “I knew I had to go big and for the Bucs if I had even a remote chance of a decent finish. Never did I believe that I would go from the bottom to the top. I’m sure glad I heeded The Commish’s advice on picking the Buccaneers. Now I’m now ready to start my own dynasty and will be anxious to have the trophy in my hands very shortly.”
We set several new records during the playoffs and those will be published at a later date in the not too distant future, once they are confirmed. As for the Participants, here are your final standings (and point totals) for the 2021 season:
Henrico FiveOh will be getting the trophy engraving updated then shipped to Comeback Kid as soon as possible. I hope everyone had an enjoyable time participating in the 33rd edition of the HSBT. Look for my updated stats and new records email. Summer training camps are 5 short months away.
Until then I remain,

Super Bowl Game Analysis & Prediction
The Chiefs are going for their 2nd straight title, a rarely achieved feat. The heavy underdog Buccaneers are hoping to continue their winning formula playing on their home field.
When the Chiefs Have the Ball
The Bucs don’t… In their meeting during the (ir)regular season, Chiefs WR Tyreek Hill amassed over 200 receiving yards and 3 TD’s – in the 1st quarter! The speedy and elusive WR is a “go all the way” threat every time he touches the ball. TE Travis Kelce is another game-breaker and the best in the business at his position. QB Patrick Mahomes (the #2 G.O.T.T. – Second Greatest Of This Time behind that superstar in western New York…) will need to be his best to avoid the massive Bucs pass rush behind a suspect offensive line. Will the Chiefs inconsistent running game come to life or fall prey to the tough Tampa Bay LB’s? How fast can the Chiefs score?
Edge – Chiefs, unless the Bucs get to Mahomes for 3 or more sacks
When the Buccaneers Have the Ball
The Chiefs don’t… By a huge margin, this is the best arsenal that QB Brady has ever had at his disposal. 3 terrific WR’s (4 if Antonio Brown plays), 2 bruising RB’s who could easily put up over 100 yards each. Gronk at TE. How slow can the Bucs move the chains and keep long scoring drives alive? Will Gronk make another TD pass to Brady in the Super Bowl?
The Chief D is suspect and inconsistent, but have a nose for turnovers.
Edge – Bucs, unless the Chiefs force more than 5 three-and-outs
The Commish’s Game Prediction
One last run for The G.O.A.T. – Tampa Bay 33, Kansas City 31
HSBT Thoughts (based on current position)

25 Jan 2021Participants,
Now that we have the Super Bowl matchup established, let’s take a look at the Conference Championship Games that were played Sunday.
#5 Tampa Bay Buccaneers 31, #1 Green Bay Packers 26
Guess who just won their 10th Conference Championship? Guess who is playing in their 10th Super Bowl? Yep, that’s right. What an upset and road performance by Tampa Bay, who won 3 road playoff games in a row. Their next game will be at home (for the 1st time in Super Bowl history!)
Tampa Bay scored often and early and took the frigid Wisconsin wind right out of Packers Skipper Aaron Rodgers’ sails. The Pack fought back several times to get within 1 score of taking the lead, only to be frustrated by an INT (the Bucs had 3 of them) or missed opportunity.
Kudos to the Bucs for a solid game plan and not letting the elements impact their play on the field. Back home to Tampa Bay for a home game on Feb 7!
HSBT Game Update – Greg the Great and JTB took shared honors with 99 points (lowest Conference Championship Game winning total since 2008), while a pair of goose-eggs were recorded.
#1 Kansas City Chiefs 38, #2 Buffalo Bills 24
The Bills started with a 9-point lead after the 1st Quarter (aided by a KC punt return fumble on the KC 3-yard line) and the Beef on ‘Weck was tasting mighty fine (more au jus, please!) Could this be the 2nd road team victory of the day? Unfortunately, the game has 3 more quarters, in which the Chiefs dominated with a combination of a speedy and dynamic offense and a blitzing D that got Bills QB (and their offense) out of synch all night. The few valiant attempts at a late comeback were squelched, and the Chiefs ended up as AFC Champions (for the 2nd straight year) when all was said and done. Back to Tampa for a rematch of the Week 12 game, where the Chiefs beat the Bucs at Raymond James Stadium, 27-24. Tampa Bay has not lost a game since then. Just saying…
HSBT Game Update – 2021 Winner and Ben the Butler took shared honors with 72 points (lowest Conference Championship Game winning total since 2002).
HSBT Update
PPP. Pathetic Participant Picks. Combined 1-15 for the weekend. A miserable 737 totals points earned (a miniscule 92 per Participant). Even the Participant who got the 1 game right (Pete the Terp with the KC over Buffalo pick – more on that in a bit), did not earn any Variance points.
So, with 1 HUGE game yet to be played, below are the current HSBT Standings.
Thanks to all Participants for submitting your picks on time. The Commish and his team will be sequestered (I guess “quarantined” is a more appropriate term these days) over the next several days, as we prepare to share with you the actual game score for SB55.
Until the SB55 Analysis and Prediction is published, I remain

22 Jan 2021Participants,
Reminder that your picks for both games are to be submitted no later than 3:00pm EST on Sunday (just before kickoff of the NFC Championship game). So far, we have had a great year with everyone complying by the rules and deadlines. Let’s keep that trending!
We have a pair of Week 6 rematches to determine who will play in SB 55.
NFC CHAMPIONSHIP
#5 Tampa Bay Buccaneers (12-5) @ #1 Green Bay Packers (14-3)
Battle of the Bays! The “old guns” will suit up for this classic game. This is the 14th conference championship game for the GOAT (he won 9 of them, all with that team from the upper northeast US that failed miserably to make the playoffs this year) and the 1st home conference championship game for the other #12. Welcome to Mr. Rodgers’ Neighborhood! The Bucs handed the Pack their worst defeat of the season in the Week 6 game in Tampa, holding Green Bay to 10 points.
The Packers are favored by 6.5 this weekend, with 3 of those attributed to being the home team. The forecast for kickoff is a balmy 20 degrees with a mild breeze. Perfect tundra weather for hosting a team from Florida. It’s been 10 years since the Packers won the Super Bowl, when they defeated the Steelers behind a solid QB performance by Aaron Rodgers. The Buccaneers have not played in a Super Bowl since 2003 (when they beat the Raiders).
GB QB Rodgers has been surgical this season, leading the NFL in literally every efficiency stat. TB QB Brady started slow in his new environs, but the team has been coming on strong over the last 6 weeks.
Some Things to Ponder Before Making Your Pick:
After 54 years, will the Super Bowl finally be played on a team’s home field? Not.
Green Bay 34, Tampa Bay 22
AFC CHAMPIONSHIP
#2 Buffalo Bills (15-3) @ #1 Kansas City Chiefs (15-2)
The “young guns” are taking center stage and 2 of the very best will be showcasing their aerial and ground talents. How’s Mahomes’ compressed nerve? More importantly, how are the nerves of those Bills fans? The last time these 2 teams met in the AFC Championship game in 1994, the Bills clobbered the Chiefs, 30-13. In their more recent Week 6 tilt, the visiting Chiefs beat the Bills and you gotta Bill-lieve that Buffalo wants to return the favor Sunday night.
Some Things to Ponder Before Making Your Pick:
The Bills will play their best game of the season on both offense and defense and advance to Tampa Bay in 2 weeks! Comeback Kid makes an appointment to get fingernail implants after this game.
Buffalo 31, Kansas City 30 (as Bills rookie K Tyler kicks some Bass for the winner with 0:19 left in the game!)
HSBT UPDATE
Now that it’s getting down to serious business in the HSBT, the picks are becoming harder and harder. Only 275 miniscule points separate the leader from the basement dweller and the fragile lead can evaporate in a hurry. So, what is on each Participant’s mind heading into the Conference Championship games?
Historically, the leader at this juncture has gone on to capture the trophy only 8 times in 32 tries.
Please be sure to submit your picks no later than 3:00pm EST on Sunday. The Commish will be updating the game scores real-time and Slack will be dominating the social media airwaves. Also – be sure to stock up on your favorite foods for the big games. It will be 7 hours of viewing and eating enjoyment.
Until the Conference Championship games re-cap and HSBT update is published early next week I remain,

18 Jan 2021DIVISIONAL ROUND RE-CAP & HSBT UPDATE
Before starting the Divisional Round Re-Cap, I would be remiss not to mention that in the 6 Super Wild Card Weekend games, JTB recorded an undefeated slate by picking all 6 game winners. Yep, 6-0. Great start (but with a “minor” correction this past weekend)!
Three. 3. The biggest number of the weekend?
DIVISIONAL ROUND RE-CAP
#1 Green Bay Packers 32, #5 LA Rams 18
A healthy Aaron vs. a banged up Aaron. Great offense beats great defense. The Packers offense steamrolled the NFL’s No. 1-ranked defense (too bad all-world DT Aaron Donald was not at 100%). The Rams D had smothered opponents all season by inviting them to run, avoiding giving up the big plays and daring offenses to dink and dunk their way down the field, betting most offenses would get impatient. Most can’t play that style. Aaron Rodgers can and did at Lambeau in the weekend opener. It was a beautiful, balanced offensive performance by the NFC’s #1 seed.
The Rams played better Goff-ense, but it wasn’t their day in the frozen tundra (where QB Jared is now 1-3 when the game time temp is less than 33).
An extra day for rest and game prep bodes well for next Sunday’s clash.
HSBT Update – As in Super Wild Card Weekend, 2021 Winner gets off to a good start and leads the way with 97 points (anchored by a season low variance of 3 paltry points)
#2 Buffalo Bills 17, #5 Baltimore Ravens 3
A thriller, capped off by a 101-yard Pick 6 by the Bills in Quarter 3! Josh Allen (1 of 3 legitimate contenders for league MVP) tossed another TD to WR Stefon Diggs – a 3-yarder. The Bills D came up huge, resulting in three 3-and-out’s by the Ravens.
HSBT Update – Pete the Terp (one of 2 Participants to pick the Ravens to win), picks a low game score and walks away with 142 points. He would have rather walked away with a Ravens win.
#1 Kansas City Chiefs 22, #6 Cleveland Browns 17
Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid was 3-0 vs. the Browns before kickoff of the Sunday starter game (roughly a 3pm kickoff). The stripes were not kind to Cleveland all day and cost them a minimum of 3 points (and most likely 10). KC QB Mahomes suffered a concussion and his status for next weekend is up in the air right now.
The game played a lot tighter than predicted. Kudos to the Browns.
HSBT Update – Pete the Terp earns the most points once again, with 101. Is the Divisional Round points record (422 in 2014 by Henrico FiveOh) in jeopardy?
#5 Tampa Bay Buccaneers 30, #2 New Orleans Aints 20
The “over-40” QB game became a disappointment for the Aints Drew Brees, who might have played his last NFL game, as he tossed 3 picks in another bitter home playoff loss. The Bucs Brady accounts for 3 TD’s (2 by air – 1 being a 3-yd strike – and 1 by land) and K Ryan Succop goes 3-for-3 on FG’s and 3-for-3 on Extra Points.
In this, the 3rd game of the season between these 2 NFC South rivals, the Aints did not go marching on to win #3.
HSBT Update – Buffalo Bill chalks up the most points, with 187, anchored by a game variance of 3.
HSBT UPDATE
After 10 games and with only 3 to go (representing over 55% of the remaining points to be earned), the standings look like this:
2 huge games this coming weekend and The Commish and his team will be busy in our never-ending quest to provide you with the best and most informative information to help you with your game picks.
